Boston: the First Impression

Boston: the First Impression

Like in many other American cities, the centre of Boston harmoniously combines modern skyscrapers, old Victorian buildings and gothic-style churches. Despite some unpleasant exceptions, it looks rather pretty (especially if we compare it with some other cities for instance, Chicago). There is an "intervening skyscraper tier" with buildings made of various building material found between the very high buildings and 4 or 5-storeyed houses and, therefore, the difference between the height and the style becomes less obvious, which makes it a real delight for your eyes. Pavement gives place to the stone roadway with horses carrying their carriages despite the intensive traffic. There are also a lot of musicians, beggars, barkers and stands offering you all kinds of goods all over the place. All in all, the centre is really crowded and active life is boiling over.
Boston is also proud of its oldest metro in the United States. The metro scheme is rather simple, though not very logical. Moreover, some of the metro lines do not have "the lines" as such and go along the surface, which makes them look like tram lines.
One of the best Boston attractions is the Boston Common Park a very beautiful park in the old Boston centre. Here you can hire a boat and make a small voyage along the river, feed the squirrels and stroll along the Freedom Trail, dedicated to the most memorable places of 1775 American Revolution. Winter is the time when a skating rink is opened here. The rink is rather small, however, the ice is good, skates rented are sharp and you can enjoy the music playing and buy hot chocolate nearby, when tired.
Go further past the park, and you will get to the Newbury street famous for its boutiques, street cafes and artistic salons. The street is really neat and you if you stroll along this place, you will be able to feel the old English spirit, observe the architecture as well as the latest trendy designer shops and clothes in their windows. The street goes as far as the Copley Square with one of the most beautiful American buildings - Trinity Church, luxury Copley shopping mall, Hancock skyscraper, the public library and the New Old South Church.
Finding you way on the Charles river embankment in summer, don't miss the chance and use the amphibian troop-carrier "Duck" to travel along the city's most interesting places, including the river itself.
Another Boston famous landmark is the John Hancock Tower skyscraper created of blue glass in 1976. This is the highest building in New England with its 226 metres height and 60 floors. Go along the Boylston Street and you will see the Prudential Tower with excellent panoramic views over the city. Christ-scientist center complex is situated close to the tower and comprises several Paladin- style buildings that surround the huge fountain (which does not work at winter time).
If you want to come back to the old Boston centre, use Commonwelth Avenue one of the most beautiful city avenues at which you can observe the monuments to many outstanding Boston citizens. Then you can direct your way to the cradle of American Revolution the Boston harbour, where there is New England aquarium found. Also, you can make a Boston Harbor Island Cruise or a Whale Watch cruise that is really worth seeing (but mind that sometimes you might not see the whales themselves).
